Il primo uso registrato del termine fu dal drammaturgo Robert Greene, che lo usò per descrivere William Shakespeare:

There is an upstart crow, beautified with our feathers, that with his tiger's heart wrapped in a player's hide supposes he is as well able to bombast out a blank verse as the best of you: and being an absolute Johannes Factotum, is in his own conceit the only Shake-scene in a country.

Ovviamente, lo intendeva beffardamente in questo contesto: riferiva in modo derisorio il fatto che Shakespeare fosse un attore e un drammaturgo (anche se nessuno lo chiamava sottilmente un plagarista).

Allora, il termine aveva connotazioni esclusivamente negative. Anche il termine moderno "tuttofare" è stato inizialmente usato in modo del tutto negativo, essendo il primo uso registrato Saggi e personaggi di una prigione e prigionieri di Geffray Minshall, che era una raccolta di saggi satirici che fungevano da manuale di una volta di ciò che ora potremmo chiamare la penologia:

Now for the most part, your porter is either some broken citizen, who has played jack-of-all-trades, some pander, broker, or hangman that has played the knave with all men and furthermore certainly has a red beard…

Suggerire che il tuttofare fosse una specie di truffatore che si è dichiarato esperto in molteplici campi senza essere dedicato a una professione.

La frase ha ottenuto proverbialmente le sue connotazioni positive, attraverso un verso di origine sconosciuta:

Jack of all trades, master of none,

though oftentimes better than master of one.
